
The I-X Women in AI network (IX-WAI) is excited to announce the call for the second round of the Early Career Development grants (up to £300*) specifically for women and non-binary individuals engaged in AI or wanting to enter the field. These grants are intended to support conference attendance, training, and other professional development opportunities. This initiative is part of our commitment to providing additional support for women in AI.
The deadline for this round is 30 April 2025.
Please note: the activity for which you are applying must take place at least one month after the application deadline. If you have already been awarded the grant, you are not eligible to apply again.
To apply for a grant, please complete this brief online form with the following information:
- Requested amount (up to £300)
- Purpose of the grant (one sentence)
- Departmental account number (or your supervisor/mentor’s departmental account number for fund transfer if selected)
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Brief proposal (~400 words) outlining the purpose and impact of the grant.

The second round results
We are also happy to announce the winners of the previous round:
- Irea Mosquera Lois (Department of Materials)
Irea will attend the “Artificial Intelligence for Advanced Materials” conference, an event that brings together experts from the machine learning and materials science communities.
- Aileen Cooney (Department of Chemistry)
Aileen will participate in the EMBL-EBI course “Microscopy data analysis: machine learning and the BioImage Archive”. This course will provide her with the opportunity to enhance her CV and expand her network of bioimaging colleagues.
- Farwa Abbas (Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering)
Farwa will present her paper on interpretable AI methods in neural signal analysis at the ICASSP 2025 conference. This event will help her gain deeper insights into how her research can be applied to real-world clinical settings.
- Niki Kotecha (Department of Chemical Engineering)
The grant will assist with Niki’s travel expenses to present her PhD research on multi-objective reinforcement learning for process control (MORL4PC) at an Applied AI-focused conference.
