About the Workshops
Academic Track
Research Funding: Securing Fellowships
This workshop will focus on fellowships with the aim of demystifying the application process. It will enable you to:
- Gain an understanding of the funding landscape (we’ll focus on the UK, but signpost to international opportunities).
- Appreciate what Fellowships are and their benefits in accelerating your career.
- Recognise what makes a strong fellowship application, and tips for completing the different sections of a fellowship.
- Make a plan for next steps in funding your research and where to access further support.
Landing your first Postdoc
Your first postdoctoral position is an important step along the academic career path, so it is important to get it right. This interactive workshop will enable you to:
- Identify what you want from your first postdoctoral research position
- Understand the different types of postdoctoral research positions
- Understand how to apply for different postdoctoral positions, including how to approach PIs/Group
- Leaders, tailoring your applications appropriately
- Map out a timeline and plan out action to secure your first postdoc
Professional Track
Unlocking a New Career: Opportunities beyond Academia
Around 50% of individuals move into careers beyond academia after they graduate, with many moving on later in their academic career. But what do they do and how do they get there?
This 90-minute, interactive workshop, will enable you to:
- Identify what you want in your career
- Identify the transferable skills you have acquired as a PhD student or postdoc, as well as the potential skills gaps that need filling
- Understand the range of career options available to you
- Understand the route to entry for careers beyond academia
Building Your Personal Brand
How to deliver a message to your audience? How to tell the story of your career or project through visual cues? In this workshop, we will breakdown what makes a good narrative, top of minds when approaching building your own story in a communicative way, and touch the existing methods and tools that can deliver the desired results.
Start-up Track
Founding a Start-up: Testing & Growing your Ideas
Here we cover ideation, iteration & customer discovery when building a product. We’ll talk you through mom testing & demonstrate through an interactive workshop why most ideas are bad initially.
Fundraising 101: What Makes a VC-backable Startup
What’s the difference between an SME and a startup? What do investors look for when you’re pitching to them with very little apart from an idea? What’s the best approach to fundraising? In this session, we’ll be answering all these questions – and more!
